I set aside a designated amount of money each month for my
food/grocery budget. Many years ago, one of Mother Little Helper’s wanted to go
to the grocery store. I had to explain that there was no more money in the food
budget and we’d go again the following week.
The next day, my little helper brought home cookbooks from the
school library. The purpose was to find recipes to cook using food we
had left in the house. I happily accepted the thoughtful offer.
The library has always been a home-run for our family. Besides
books, there were videos and puzzles. Children’s programming to enjoy. Book
fairs in the fall and reading programs in the summer. Holiday specials for young
children. Each of Mother’s Little Helpers volunteered at least one
summer at the library to give back for the free programming they received as a
little reader. It’s never too early to pay it forward!
SOUND THE BUGLE: Today’s tip! Children’s cookbooks! I wish I’d thought
of this as a young bride learning to cook! The recipes contain few ingredients.
How frugal! The preparation of the recipe is easy because it’s geared for a child
and the outcome is always delicious because otherwise children wouldn’t eat it!
So stroll your way through the children’s section of your local library and
pick up some cookbooks for kids
